A puppy's first grooming experience is one of the most important appointments they will ever have. How a puppy feels about their first groom shapes their attitude toward grooming for the rest of their life. A positive, gentle introduction builds confidence and creates a dog that is calm and cooperative at every future appointment. A bad first experience can create fear and anxiety that takes months or years to undo. That is why we take puppy grooms seriously. We recommend scheduling your puppy's first professional groom between 12 and 16 weeks of age, after they have received at least two rounds of vaccinations. Check with your veterinarian to confirm your puppy is ready. The appointment includes a gentle warm-water bath with puppy-safe shampoo, a soft blow-dry on a low setting, a light face and body trim to get them used to the sensation of clippers and scissors, a nail introduction where we touch and handle their paws, and an ear check. We go at your puppy's pace the entire time. If they need a break, we take a break. If they are scared of the dryer, we turn it down or towel dry. There is never any rushing, forcing, or restraint beyond what is needed for safety. We use lots of praise, positive reinforcement, and treats throughout the session. The mobile grooming van is actually ideal for puppy first grooms because there are no other dogs barking, no unfamiliar smells from a busy salon, and no overwhelming stimulation. It is just your puppy and one gentle groomer in a calm, quiet space. Most puppy grooms take about an hour to an hour and a half. After the first visit, we recommend scheduling your next appointment within 4 to 6 weeks to maintain the positive association and keep your puppy on a consistent grooming routine.
