Which Poodle Haircut Is Right for Your Dog in DFW?
Compare the most popular Poodle haircuts, from the puppy cut to the lamb cut. See which style suits your dog and North Texas heat.

Poodles have a dense, curly coat that grows all the time. That coat is why Poodles need regular haircuts. It is also why there are so many Poodle haircut styles to choose from.
The right Poodle haircut depends on your dog's size, your schedule and the weather. Dallas-Fort Worth summers are long and hot, so comfort matters here too. Here is how the most common cuts compare.
Why Poodles Need Regular Haircuts
A Poodle's coat is a single layer of tight curls. Loose hairs do not fall out the way they do on a shedding breed. They get caught in the curls instead.
Those trapped hairs turn into tangles, and tangles become mats close to the skin. A regular haircut keeps the coat short enough to brush all the way through. Most Poodles do best with a groom every four to six weeks.
Poodle Puppy Cut
The puppy cut is a simple pet style. The coat is trimmed to one short, even length over the body and legs. The face and feet can be clipped clean or left fuzzy.
It is easy to brush and dries fast after a bath. That makes it a good choice for DFW summers and for busy owners. Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles all wear it well.
Poodle Teddy Bear Cut

The teddy bear cut keeps the face full and round instead of clipped. The muzzle stays soft, and the ears are trimmed to frame the face. The body is usually kept short to medium.
It gives a softer look than a clean Poodle face. The fuller face does hold food and water, so plan on a daily comb.
Poodle Lamb Cut
The lamb cut keeps the body short and leaves the legs fuller. The face, feet and base of the tail are often clipped clean. A rounded topknot finishes the look.
It looks classic without the upkeep of a show clip. The fuller legs pick up grass burrs and debris, so comb them after walks.
Poodle Sporting Clip
The sporting clip is short and practical. The body and legs are clipped to about an inch or less. The face, feet and tail base are clipped clean. A small topknot and a tail pom are left on.
This is one of the easiest Poodle cuts to keep up. It suits active dogs that swim, hike or run through brush.
Poodle Miami Cut
The Miami cut clips the body short and leaves round pom-poms on the lower legs. The tail keeps a pom, and the head keeps a topknot. It is a playful look that stays cool in the heat.
The pom-poms need regular brushing to stay round. Everything else is short and simple.
Show Clips Like the Continental
The Continental and English Saddle clips are the ones you see in the show ring. They have shaved sections, a full mane and shaped pom-poms. They take a lot of skill and a lot of upkeep.
Most pet Poodles do not need a show clip. If you love the look, ask your groomer about a simpler pet version.
Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle Haircuts
Every cut above works on all three Poodle sizes. A Toy Poodle stands 10 inches or less at the shoulder. A Miniature is over 10 and up to 15 inches. A Standard is taller than 15 inches.
Size changes the time more than the style. A Standard has far more coat to bathe, dry and trim. Plan on a longer appointment for a Standard than for a Toy or Mini.
Mini Poodle haircuts tend to stay simple. The puppy cut and the teddy bear cut are both popular choices for smaller Poodles.
Choosing a Poodle Haircut for DFW Heat
North Texas summers often reach 100 degrees. A shorter cut dries faster and holds less heat. The puppy cut, sporting clip and Miami cut all work well from June through September.
Keep some coat on the body even in summer. Bare skin can sunburn, and pale-skinned Poodles burn most easily.
Swimming and home baths are fine in hot weather. Dry the coat all the way to the skin afterward. Damp curls mat quickly.
What to Tell Your Groomer About the Cut
Bring a photo of the cut you like. Cut names are not the same at every grooming shop. A picture helps avoid surprises.
Say how short you want the body, legs and face. If the coat is matted, ask what length is realistic. Mats often have to be clipped out, so the first cut may run shorter.
How Often to Book a Poodle Haircut
Most Poodles need a full groom every four to six weeks. Short cuts can stretch closer to six weeks. Fuller styles like the teddy bear cut need a trim closer to four.
Between haircuts, a bath and brush keeps the coat clean and free of tangles. For a young Poodle, our puppy's first groom is an easy way to start.
Signs Your Poodle Is Due for a Haircut
- The curls look flat or fuzzy instead of shaped
- Hair is growing into the eyes
- The comb catches behind the ears or under the legs
- Hair covers the paw pads
- Nails click on hard floors
Care Between Poodle Haircuts
Brush a few times a week with a slicker brush. Then run a metal comb through the coat from the skin out. If the comb catches, there is a tangle left to work out.
Keep the ears clean and dry. Poodles grow hair inside the ear canal, and it can trap moisture. Ask your vet if your dog gets ear infections often.
Wipe under the eyes daily if your Poodle gets tear stains. Light-colored Poodles show stains the most.
