How to Prepare Your Dog for Their First Groom

The first grooming experience a dog has sets a template for every appointment afterward. A good first experience means a dog that's manageable and cooperative for the rest of their life. A bad one can create anxiety that lasts years.

Start at home. Before the first professional appointment, spend a few minutes each day touching your dog's paws, ears, and mouth. Dogs that have been handled regularly in these areas are less reactive when a groomer does the same thing.

Introduce the equipment. Let your dog sniff and investigate things like a brush or comb. Run clippers (not touching the dog) so the sound becomes familiar. The less novel the grooming van experience is, the less stressful it is.

Tire them out. A dog that's had a good walk or play session before their appointment is calmer and more relaxed during grooming. If possible, schedule appointments after your dog's morning exercise.

Skip breakfast if there's any nausea risk. Some dogs, especially anxious ones, can get car-sick or stress-sick in unfamiliar situations. If your dog has a sensitive stomach, skip the meal before the appointment.

Stay calm yourself. Dogs read owner anxiety. If you're nervous about how the appointment will go, your dog picks up on it. Hand them off confidently and let the groomer take it from there.

Choose the right service. For a first appointment, a Puppy's First Groom or a simple bath and brush is better than a full groom with a haircut. Get the dog comfortable with the experience before adding the complexity of scissoring and styling.

Debrief after. Pay attention to how your dog seems after their first appointment. If they're relaxed, that's a great sign. If they seem stressed, talk to your groomer about what they noticed and whether adjustments make sense for next time.
