The Best Dog Breeds for the DFW Climate

Dallas-Fort Worth summers are serious. July and August regularly hit over 100°F, and the humidity in the eastern counties adds to the misery. If you're choosing a dog for the DFW climate, or if you already have a dog and want to know how to keep them comfortable, coat type matters a lot.

Breeds that handle DFW heat well. Short-coated breeds like Vizslas, Beagles, Boxers, and Greyhounds are generally well-suited to warm climates. Their thin coats allow heat to dissipate more efficiently. They still need shade, water, and air conditioning during peak summer heat, but they're not fighting their coat.

Breeds that struggle. Double-coated northern breeds — Huskies, Malamutes, Samoyeds — were bred for cold climates. They can live comfortably in DFW with proper management (air conditioning, limited outdoor time during peak heat, regular de-shedding), but they require more attention.

The de-shedding myth. One of the most common mistakes DFW dog owners make is shaving their double-coated dogs in summer. It seems logical — remove the coat, dog stays cooler. In reality, the double coat provides insulation both ways, and shaving it can damage the coat's structure permanently. A proper de-shedding treatment that removes loose undercoat while leaving the guard hairs intact is the right approach.

Doodle breeds in DFW. Goldendoodles and Labradoodles are enormously popular in DFW, and their wavy or curly coats can handle the heat reasonably well — but they mat quickly in humidity. Regular grooming is essential, and many DFW doodle owners keep their dogs in shorter summer cuts.

Year-round grooming matters more in Texas. In northern states, dogs can sometimes go longer between appointments in winter. In DFW, the weather is warm enough year-round that coat management doesn't have an off-season. Budget for consistent appointments throughout the year.
